This PTA tax was introduced in 2019 by then telecom minister Fawad Chaudhry. The Federal Board of Revenue formulated the taxes and imposed them on all imported phones via any channel. In a press release on 24 January 2022, the PTA clarified that these so-called PTA taxes are duties that are applied and collected by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) directly. The regulatory body only provides services like Device Identification and Registration Database System for the general public. It only provides technical support for people who want information regarding FBR smartphone tax rates, procedures, necessary documentation, and register customer complaints.
